What is an AI agent and does my business need one?

An AI agent is software that uses a language model to carry out a task with several steps, such as reading an incoming email, looking up the customer and drafting a reply, instead of answering a single question. Most small businesses don’t need one to start; they need their basic steps automated first.

Agents are useful when the work involves reading messy input: emails, forms, documents or messages that don’t follow a fixed format. For predictable steps, like sending a confirmation text or copying a form into a spreadsheet, a plain automation is cheaper, faster and easier to trust.

If you do use an agent:

• keep a person in the loop for anything that spends money or speaks for your business
• log what it does, so you can check its work
• start with one narrow job and widen it once it proves reliable

A better first question than “do we need AI?” is “which task takes the most time each week, and what does it need to read?”
